The Wisconsin Engineer Wiki

History of the Wisconsin Engineer

The Wisconsin Engineer was first published in June of 1896.  The greeting in the historical issue stated, "It has for some time now been the desire of many students and alumni of the College of Mechanics and Engineering that they might have a representative among the periodicals issued by technical schools of the country; and that, if possible, they might take, as an institution, some more active part in the dissemination of engineering knowledge and experience.  It is the aim of this journal to fill that want in so far as it may be able.”  This goal has remained as the main objective for the Wisconsin Engineer for all of its publication.

The Wisconsin Engineer is one of the original five magazines to join Engineering College Magazines Associated (ECMA).  The Wisconsin Engineer is published four times a year by and for the students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  The Wisconsin Engineer is an active organization on the engineering campus.  Staff size has varied over the last five years, generally ranging from 60-80 members.  A rejuvenated advertising staff increased advertising revenue by 2400% in 1995 and 1996.  In 1997, it grew enormously once again.  Organization and hard work has improved the Wisconsin Engineer, and we hope to continue our success.

The faculty advisor is Steven Zwickel.  The advisor also teaches a one-credit class titled Engineering Professional Development 690: Special Topics, where instruction on the magazine occurs.  Previous advisors include Ryn Etter and Don Woolston.

The Wisconsin Engineer is published four times yearly: September, November, February, and April.  A non-profit corporation was set up to publish the magazine in 1912, but the corporation was involuntarily dissolved in 1994.  Non-profit status, which requires filing of a yearly report with the state, was reinstated in 2000.

Wendt and Memorial libraries helped digitize old volumes of Wisconsin Engineer and made them available online.  Archiving old issues of the magazine is an ongoing project.
